Best overall music software

Hey, I hate Microsoft, too. but for the last few years I've been perfectly happy with WMP as a general purpose music playing/recording software. I hate the way Real Player wants to take over everything in your system and sign your life away when you install it, and I tried Winamp without ever being able to get enthusiastic about it, so I've used WMP 7 since it came out and never had any major problems.

Now it's playing up on me. It's quite happy to play mp3's but spits the dummy whenever I put a CD in. Fault, error, naughty boy, close down, etc.

I still have a copy of WMP 7 to reinstall if necessary, but I have tried that without success, so before I try that again, how can I remove all traces of it before attempting to reinstall?

To explain, I am of the dinosaur variety who still prefers W98SE to XP and firmly believes that the only reason Microsoft issues updates is not because it's a better program but because they can better keep track of what you are doing. Stuff 'em. Which is why I don't want the latest WMP.

Opinions are sought from PPRuNers as to the relative benefits of the latest versions of competing music software in terms of user friendliness and their drawbacks in Big Brother terms.

Can't help with uninstalling WMP but have a suggestion for a player. The latest version of Cowon Jetaudio is pretty comprehensive to say the least. For the record, I run an earlier version on Win98 without probs. Its freeware downloadable from http://www.cowon.com/eng/product/jetaudio5/about.html
Mind you- I still have a soft spot for my l'il ol' Winamp.

Cool Sonique

Give Sonique a try. You can choose your skins from New Age to Death Metal ...

The trouble is that for most news bulletins etc that require audio and video, the question usually comes down to, do you have WMP or Real Player? It's not just a matter of listening to music, it's an all purpose player you need.

Bugga!

Must concur with the previous poster - there is nothing on the Windows platform to compare with iTunes.

Don't worry, though a Windows version is in the pipeline, as Apple seeks to expand its incredibly successful iTunes Music Store download service.

So, like Hwel says, either buy a Mac, or wait a little longer
