File in Use/Unlock Utility Required

Okay...I'm not going to into why - it's too boring.

Can you recommend a utility that shows me what files are in use on the operating system and also has the facility to unlock the file access.

Remote control or network capability is not required - local will do. However, it must work on Windows NT 4 or 5(2000/XP).

Affirmative answers welcome

Is the Windows Task Manager not enough? Or am I missing something here?

The Computer Management plug-in doesn't do it - only works with shared folders and sispalys those files open if using 'Server.

Task Manager shows processes (executables), applications, process and network data.

In both cases, they're not what am I looking for, as explained above, which is to determine what files (not just executables) are in use on a workstation and be able to kill the file lock at will.

Any better ideas?

Inuse.exe from the microsoft Resouce kit.

It allows a file that is in use to be replaced by another at reboot.

There are certain files that you do not want unlocked, Pagefile.sys, explorer.exe and systray.exe come to mind as these are O/S files required to be in use all the time.

Don't want to kill processes!

inuse.exe (as was openfiles.exe) was a useful lead but didn't get anywhere.

I used to be able to do what I'm after on WIndows 95 years and years ago using a freeware tool.

Have you tried LockCheck? Available at a number of sites, including:

http://www.simtel.net/pub/pd/34213.html

Can't try it at work since I am "Locked down"!
