Here lies the problem, I'm on Windows 11, and even when I manage to download the driver, it won't work in 11 in anyway whatsover. Thanks for your reply, but looking at it again this afternoon, I fear it's the recycling depot for it. I must admit to being a little disappointed in VueScan.

The TWAIN drivers are the responsibility of the scanner manufacturer. I think your disappointment should be directed at Canon.

Sorry about that, I wish I knew the answer. I am on Win 10 and don't have any Win 11 experience to share here. I figured there might be a compatibility mode under which you can install older style software. You could also try sending an e-mail to the Vuescan support address, perhaps they have an idea for a possible workaround.

Absolutely - Canon are a disgrace in not providing drivers for newer versions of Windows, and also not providing Linux drivers. On top of that they refuse to provide the information necessary for the open source community to create drivers for products for which Canon no longer provide drivers. Of course they just want to sell new kit, but vote with your feet and don't buy Canon products - that's the only way that will make them mend their ways.

I had exactly this problem with a Canon 8400F flatbed scanner - no support for Linux or Win 10, so I had to keep a standalone Win7 box to scan to. When the scanner finally died I replaced it with a new flatbed that was not a Canon product.

Yes you're both quite right, I shouldn't blame VueScan.

I wouldn't go near anything made by Canon after this. To make things even worse, when they tell you they don't support a driver for the scanner, they put 'why don't you go to our prodects page' so you can buy a shiny new piece of kit.

Whilst I'm here, anyone know of a decent flatbed scanner that can scan slides/film? Hopefully that won't upset the bank manager.

I've been told that if you want a flatbed scanner that can do slides and film, you should go for an Epson V850 pro... problem is that this WILL upset the bank manager. The market for flatbeds with that option isn't there anymore, so you will not find many options available unfortunately. I have a flatbed for photos and documents and a separate Plustek 8300i scanner for my slide and film scans. You could have a look around for second hand Epson scanners of course.

Edit: Epson has a V600 model as well, which is significantly cheaper. You would have to compare the specs to find out where the differences are though. I think the V850 has a dedicated lens for film scanning, the V600 may use the same sensor for documents and film, but that's guesswork from me.

For day to day quick document scans-- if you have an iPhone, it actually makes it easy and does a pretty amazing job. I'm not talking about just taking a picture. Open up the notes app and create a new note. Hit the little camera button at the bottom of the notes app, and choose 'Scan Documents'. Follow the prompts. Save the file.

Easy .pdf scans of documents in seconds....

Certainly used Office Lens on my Samsung Android for scanning docs - in fact here's the text copied from a scanned and PDF'd Wetherspoons breakfast menu! Obviously copying has ditched the layout but it looks pretty accurate from a quick glance...
