esa-aardvark, can you tell us your operating system? Windows 10 has a predictive text function which overrides every browsers' settings. It can be turned off.

Of no importance whatsoever, my father-in-law, a great man from Brussels, Belgium, pronounces the second part of your moniker as aard-wark! I like it!

Firefox uses Spellchecking (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...-spell-checker), Auto Form Fill (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...ly-fills-forms) and Adress Bar Autocomplete (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...mplete-firefox). It could be either one of those three, depending on where in the browser or on the page you are typing. Have a look at these three information pages as they can explain how to customise the feature to do what you want, or switch it off.

On the subject of predictive text, how do I make “rate” replace “VAT”? Can it learn from me? Could it be based on the type of phone?

Asking for a friend.

My phone always replaces words like jeans with Jean's. Yet it has learned: if I type "St" it will offer "Peters" and "Street" which I text two or three times a week to a friend so she knows I will be at her flat in five mins and she can be ready for our walk.

For iPhones, see here and scroll down to 'how to set up text replacement'. My better half uses a lot of jargon (long words) on her iPad and this feature has turned out to be a real help.

A priest, a rabbit and a vicar walk into a bar.

The barman says to the rabbit, ‘What do you want to drink?’

The rabbit replies,‘I don’t know, I’m only here because of predictive text.”
