Flight Sim 2020

Hi folks,

Now that Flight Sim 2020 is out, I've decided to treat myself. So I've been looking at PCs, and been advised that a Ryzen processor (rather than Intel) is the way to go. Obviously big memory, and a lot of GPU capability will be key too.

But I'm also wondering if there's another answer...go XBox Series X when it arrives, and just buy a very functional PC for the browsing, Office, and photography that I use the existing (11 year old) PC for.

I'm guessing that total spend might be similar...any thoughts?

Personally, the PC will be better for me. I run a Ryzen 7 3700X, 16GB RAM, 2TB SSD and an RTX 2070 super GPU driving 2x 4K screens. HOTAS joystick and a good keyboard and Mouse. The main benefit is using stick, keyboard and mouse to control which would be better than an Xbox controller. Also, you can buy the physical discs for a PC which will also give you a full printed manual. That might be the route I will go.

PC is more flexible, especially regarding Multimonitor Setup, Joystick/Yoke, Rudder Pedals and other devices.
PC is fragmented hardware, so more complex in combination of different vendors for components. Did they optimize FS2020 for Intel or AMD, or do both perform and behave nicely?

IIRC the biggest difference compared to the old versions is that live streaming of the scnenery. A year ago or so it was stated that you need at least 50Mbit Internet to avoid preloading, and for full Quality and full features like 100MBit and above. I don't know if that's true at the end. Then also make sure your storage can cache all of it fast and reliable (SSD still have issues with permanent overwrite operations?).

What about those of us who don’t want all the scenery, bells and whistles? A basic instrument/procedures trainer would do the job, and older versions of FS did the job nicely, but aren’t apparently able to run on Windows 10. Is there still a workable solution available? My current laptop is 100x more powerful than I had in the 90s, but somehow less able to get meaningful flying training at home.

Just had a look at that GPU specs, super it really is, 15th most powerful readily available GPU in the world, what have games come to? My last game was Sonic the Hedgehog on the Atari.... that entire machine probably 10,000th of the power or 100,000th of the power of that GPU!

Hi guys, like many I am currently unemployed and looking for a good and professional flight simulator to try and make the most out of it ;
FS2020 looks amazing but I wonder if it will be of any use for somebody who rather than astonishing graphics is looking to possibly replicate failures and abnormals, mainly Airbus based.
Any hints ?
Cheers.

Guys, thanks a mil for the replies.

I'd like to share with You my plan so you can tell me what you think about it. I'd like to treat me with a powerful little beast of a laptop and get FS2020 by the time it comes out. As far as I could read there'll be add-ons for different Airbus model too, or is it still worth purchasing P3D/Xplane and getting the add-ons you've mentioned ?

Thanks !

Thanks for the replies too folks.

I'm thinking decent desktop, with FS2020, and later some of the more detailed add-ins (eg. PMDG - I like the fully system replication).

But X-plane could also co-exist on the same platform...

I've checked some Youtube videos on the above products... wow... simply mind blowing. I was left at FS98 and this is really astonishing.
I am also looking forward to try VR coupled flight simulation.
