Cannot Scandisk/De-frag.

Hello again folks,
Haven't needed to post for ages as I've had no problems ( tempting fate here). I decided to treat my System to a bit of maintenance the other week. Everything seemed to be going OK, Disk cleanup... Cleaned up, Scandisk.... scanned my Disks and De-Frag started to defrag my hard drive. unfortunately after several hours I needed to use my machine again , the defarg had got upto about 75%. I stopped it, used the machine again until the evening. I then started the maintenance wizard and went to bed. When I came down in the morning to recheck the machine it was locked up, the only way i could restart it was via the main power switch. As you can see by this message It is working OK but the maintenance wizard won't work. when it gets to Scandisk it says reading file allocation tables ( or something like that ) and the machine just freezes, i can't do anything with it, Ctrl-Alt-Del, etc, does nothing. I've tried leaving it for a few hours but still nothing , I end up swearing at it and pushing the main power button to restart . Any ideas ?
for info my system has: W98se, 600 Celeron, 512MB ram, 1 x 15 gig HD(4 & 11 partitions),

as usual, any help or advice greatly appreciated.

If the above doesn't work, I would guess that your Anti virus program is active.....I find much better defrag results by control-alt-delete all running programs except Explorer. It usually cures the hang and restarts.

KwikPhix: The W32.HLLW.Bymer worm can cause scandisk/defrag freeze. Is your virus program updated?
