Adding jpegs to Excel

Is it possible to add a jpeg to a cell on Excel? Have managed to add an external photo to a cell via a link but need an image in a cell if its possible.

During aircraft tare downs the part is recorded on excel but at present we have a separate data base for photos which need all the details typing in to identify the part.

Anyone got any simple instructions.

I am using Excel 2007 and it is easy. Choose the cell, then "Insert" from the top menu bar. Simples!

Thanks KelvinD, yes you can get a photo into the cell but it is large unless you manipulate it. Could do with a photo stored in the cell until you click onto it to make it visible.

This is the sort of job that should be performed using an Access database. Excel is not the right tool for the job!

I can understand why you might be tempted to use Excel but it really is an abuse of a spreadsheet program which will lead to problems in the future. With anything more than a very few images the file sizes will become enormous very quickly indeed. Then you will have issues over the time it takes to retrieve records and load and save updates.

Use a database such as Access. This will also allow for screen layouts to be designed to replicate a spreadsheet with an option to select an image by clicking on a button, or to display a small thumbnail with the record. Exactly what you seem to want.

Thanks G0ULI this is what I thought, Excel isn't the best tool for the job. Its going have to be a separate photo database with simpler descriptions/ parts reference.

I routinely use Excel spreadsheets to do one -page 'site surveys' with text and up to 8 or 9 pictures. The trick is to compress the picture file size which can be done within Excel.
Never had a problem.

Use hyperlinks

Using excel 2007 onwards , i currently use 2013

In your spreadsheet select the cell to use as a hyperlink
From the main menu line
FILE HOME INSERT Page layout etc
select Insert
Within the Insert options look over to the right and you will see Hyperlink
Selrct the cell yout want to display the .jpeg
then select Hyperlink
look through all the optioms find pictures, select the one you want, then that cell links to that .jpeg or any other file etc.
Sorry about spellinging , got bat jet lag and aussi flu with achest infection.
Hope this helps
