Mpg / Avi Editing

I've got a few mpg and avi files that need editing. Can anyone recommend a freeware, shareware or cheap programme that will do the job.

Have you tried windows movie maker, comes as standard with win me/2000/xp ? (Sorry if I am stating the obvious but it's often over looked). Fairly intuative, user friendly and free
