Reliable / stable wireless printer

[Thrust Augmentation]

I've been struggling for a while with a Samsung M2020W wireless laser printer, it requires resetting on a semi regular basis & intermittently decides to change it's gateway & IP addresses to ranges outside our network. These issues seem to be pretty common with these particular printers.

It's a pain as the printer needs to be dug out & reconfigured via USB, it's also a one button affair, so little can be done at the printer itself...

Anyway, can anyone recommend a domestic, wireless mono laser that has a reputation of being stable & doesn't have a mind of it's own on Win7?

All the government offices I have ever worked in used Hewlett Packard printers. My current home printer is an HP one based on my experiences with them at work. They may not be the cheapest or the best at anything, but they just work without faffing about.

PDR1 - I had considered hard wiring the printer to the router via Ethernet, but though that it would only cover half the possible problems. Thinking about it a bit more I suppose if the other connected devices can get online without any issues, the issue is between the router & printer, so this would probably be a cure.


The Samsung seems to have lost its tongue & is completely incommunicado through WiFi or USB, so I'll see what options there are with ethernet.

G0ULI - last time I touched an HP, it was a Deskjet 660C, 20+ years ago before wireless or USB (great little printer), HP may be a wise choice right enough & I imagine that connectivity / interface are considerably better than what I have.

Another vote for HP. Went off 'em 15 years ago when their software started trying to take over the world (pace Nortons & others..) but I now have a HP MFP M277dw, which prints double-sided, scans, etc and has a very useable software pack bundled with it.
Never a problem of it dropping off the wireless net - only it does seem to switch itself off from sleep about once a month or so, but it re-connects no bovver which switched on again.


Non-OEM toner carts make the running cost bearable, too, unlike my Canon inkjet which seems to empty half a cartridge every time I switch it on...

I'm using a Samsung M2020W while my big printer gets refurbished and it works fine for me.

Try assigning it a static address ('address reservation' in some routers) in your router rather than using DHCP - (you may need to also give it that same address in the USB configuration utility).

I use static addresses for most of the junk hooked up to my main router - so I know that rig A will always be 192.168.0.13 and so on - I also keep the range of addresses small, with just a few free for DHCP assignment of random clients.

Mac - it' already on a reserved IP on the router (still there) & was set on the printer via USB & Samsungs "SetIP" - it just seems to randomly change it's IP generaly to something thats outwith the range of the otherwise stable network.

It's all a bit beyond me to be honest & the printer doesn't even communicate via USB now...

Sounds like printer is faulty. Have you tried it on a different machine?

One last suggestion - depower printer (unplus & disconnect) and leave for 24-48hrs.

You could also try completely removing the Device from Windows using Kerem Gümrükcü's absurdly powerful Device Remover - https://device-remover.informer.com/0.9b/ - extraordinary program, hasn't been updated for a while, but still works like a charm, and see what happens.

Also try a factory reset of the printer.
