I have accepted that I have to agree to the Microsoft Terms and Conditions before I can use any Microsoft software, but now I cannot access 'Google' unless I agree to:-
A privacy reminder from Google
Scroll down and click “I agree” when you’re ready to continue to Search, or explore other options on this page.
Data we process when you use Google
When you search for a restaurant on Google Maps or watch a video on YouTube, for example, we process information about that activity – including information like the video you watched, device IDs, IP addresses, cookie data and location.
We also process the kind of information described above when you use apps or sites that use Google services like ads, Analytics and the YouTube video player.
Why we process it
We process this data for the purposes described in our policy, including to:
Help our services deliver more useful, customised content such as more relevant search results;
Improve the quality of our services and develop new ones;
Deliver ads based on your interests, including things like searches you've done or videos you've watched on YouTube;
Improve security by protecting against fraud and abuse; and
Conduct analytics and measurement to understand how our services are used.
Combining data
We also combine data among our services and across your devices for these purposes. For example, we use data from trillions of search queries to build spell-correction models that we use across all of our services, and we combine data to alert you and other users to potential security risks.
Learn how Google uses data to improve your experience
As Google have infiltrated so many online applications - do I have any choice?
Will the next step be to charge for access?

And now the BBC wants me to sign in . . .

It's just Google asking if you are fine with them monetizing all the data they can harvest from your behavior online.

Are you OK with that?

I'm not sure about that.

If I write a letter the copyright is mine, but Google can use the text for whatever they want (without seeking permission or paying a royalty fee).

If I take a photograph the copyright is mine, but if I post it to a Google site they assume the right to use it and republish it.

A quick Google search allows most queries to be answered in a matter of seconds from the comfort of your armchair. Presumably the information linked to is also the property of third parties who own the copyright, but you are being granted access to that information effectively for free. Of course you can always go to a municipal library and carry out your research using paper methods. It all comes down to how much you value your time and privacy.

No such thing as a free lunch.

Use https://duckduckgo.com/ to search. If you really want google results then add "!g" to your search string. (!a for amazon). DDG does not track you, and does not pass on your data when you use their 'bangs'.

The difference between a google search and a DDG search (with !g) is surprising (perhaps not). It no wonder google have been fined billions for abusing their dominant position on the market.

DDG can be set up as your default search engine on Apple devices.
