probelm accessing BA computer issue page

May not be the right place for this but I am unable to get to the last page of the BA computer thread - whatever I do it defaults back to page 29. ??

Pprune sometimes seems to add an additional page before the first page on the thread is posted - you are probably not missing any posts. Check the number of posts, I think it may be an issue where if you add one on the total it is divisible by 20.

It may depend upon the browser used.

This is a situation that affects me from time to time - usually persists on certain threads until I 'break' the lock by adding my own contribution.
When it happens it can go on for many days, excluding me from later pages.

Yes it is a frequent situation.
Just ignore it.
I have just checked a thread I visit most days that is prone to the "spare pages.".
On my desk top PC it shows the same results on three popular browsers.

This has been happening to me off and on since I joined the forum. It usually happens as one page fills up and the next few posts need to be repaged. It'll sort itself out, and the page you were trying to open is actually a "phantom" page so you are not missing any posts.

has done so for years

This happens on many or all long threads and has done so for years.

As I recall the "people who know" say it can't be fixed.

I have wondered if it occurs because the pager (the software that calculates how many pages there are) counts deleted posts and when they are put up for display, they are not there.

It's only a minor annoyance:-)

Spurious maximum after moderation

Close, I think, but the fit seems to be better to a slightly different procedure.
It appears to me that the software maintains an accurate "high-water mark" of the most current post in a thread (correctly not counting already deleted ones). But when moderation actions delete posts faster than new ones come in, the current actual maximum can be below the "high-water mark". In that case the software which decides how many page links for pages of posts to display in the upper right-hand corner relies on the high water mark, and thus may for example display 11 pages because at one time were 206 accepted posts. But if a moderator dropped by and deleted a side-discussion amounting to 10 posts, plus a frivolous one, the current real maximum will be 195. If you are looking at page 10 you will correctly see the last currently accepted post on page 10, but the page link list in the upper right-hand corner will show you a page 11. If you click on it you will find yourself looking at page 10 again.

In summary, slight mismatches in the software mean a misleading display of links to one or more pages that are not really here, but you are in fact not failing to see the most recent posts which have not been moderated away.

I stand ready to be corrected if someone knows the actual software or has conflicting observations of behavior.
