Win 2000 Log Off
Can anyone out there tell me how to set up my computer (Win 2000), to log off automatically? At present, I have to wait for "It is now safe to switch off your computer, but my brother in law's just swithes off automatically all by itself!

Check Control Panel/Power Settings.
There should be an option to enable APM (advanced power management). Tick the box and that should do the trick.
If you don't have an ACPI power supply, the PC won't shut itself off... that's a hardware issue.

This is one of those functions that isn't even mentioned in polite company. If your PC has the capability, then it just works when you install Win2K; you don't choose to use it or not.
The clue about whether your machine has this capability is simply this:
When you turn it on do you simply push a spring-loaded button? Or do you operate toggle switch (ON/OFF) or a button that stays "in" when the PC is ON and comes out when the PC is OFF? In the latter two cases, your PC is obviously not capable of turning itself off.
Unless your PC is operated by a touch "ON", touch "OFF" button, then there isn't a hold-on relay in the circuit that can be released when the ACPI operates.
The ACPI check box referred to by ifalconer doesn't appear in Win2K.
