I use WPS Office. It loads and edits Office documents, at least the older kind (I know it opens .doc, not sure about .docx).
There may be some in-app purchases (not sure as I've never looked), but the basic app is free.

Yes, a week late but this may help future readers of this thread. 
You can get Microsoft Word for the Android and at the time of posting this, it is FREE, well sort of. It does have limited features which are unlocked if you purchase an Office 365 subscription however I personally wouldn't as the basic version was enough to create, open and edit .DOCX files.
Alternatives are the LibreOffice and Open Office. Also found one called Kingsoft Android office which I had not seen previously so I can't comment on how good it is but if the reviews are to be believed, it's fairly good.
