'error renaming the file' message in Windows 7 Pro

I wonder if anyone can help with this infuriating problem, please?

I have just started using a PC running windows 7 pro, on it I've installed xnview which I use to manage and organize a large collection of aircraft images (stored on an external HDD), when viewing images (as thumbnails) in xnview's browser, if I want to change the name of an image, all I had to do previously on my old pc (which ran XP SP3) was to right click the image, select 'rename' from the drop down menu, rename it, press enter and hey presto, image renamed. Now, on the windows 7 pc, when I do the same thing, everything is ok up until I press enter to rename the file when the message 'error renaming the file' pops up constantly! It's doin' me swede in, can anyone identify what the issue is and if there is a fix, please?

So the XP machine put the files on the external HD? It is probable that the Win7 machine thinks you are a different person without the right permissions. If you still have the XP m/c why not plug in the HD and give everyone all permissions on the drive, including at folder level of course. If not, well I know how to do it with a Linux live-boot DVD, but not in Windows, sorry.

Does it allow you to rename OK in Windows Explorer, as opposed to in the photo application?

andytug, yes, I can rename the files without a problem in windows explorer. aerobelly, plugging the external HDD into the old machine may be difficult, it's currently dead... Can I not change permissions from my current pc, if indeed it is permissions which is the issue?

If it works in Explorer it's unlikely to be a permissions issue. Is this any help though?

The file attributes may have been set to read only. The old dos command 'attrib filename.xxx -r' may work in a dos window. The use of wildcards is supported for changing multiple files e.g. attrib file????.* -r' will remove the read only flag from all files with an eight letter name starting with the letters 'file'.

If all of this is nonsense to you, then leave well alone and work through file manager or whatever else you can find that works for you.

G0ULI, yes, makes not one jott of sense to me! Looks like renaming through explorer is going to be the way ahead...

What happens if, when you open xnview, you right-click it and select "run as administrator"?
Can you successfully rename then?

Bejesus! That seems to have done the trick, Tarq57! Did as you suggested, opened xnview via 'run as administrator' and I can now rename files as before, many thanks!
