Evesham and Mesh Computers

I have been asked to recommend a suitable computer manufacturer/system to a friend in order to replace a ten year old Compaq.

I have noticed in various magazines that Mesh and Evesham seem to offer good value for money, and in the case of Mesh a 3 yr gaurantee.

Before I get in touch with either company, could anyone with either praise or cautions just advise me if these two companies are as good as they seem. Obviously I don't expect anything too derogatory, but if the cautions outweigh the praise then I will be suitably advised.

I am looking to buy a Pent.4 2.0ghz or Athlon 1.8+/256mb DDR/80gb hard drive/64mb graphics/suitable sound card/separate CD-RW & DVD drives/ 56k modem. Would also be looking for a 15" TFT/LCD screen/Epson 1250 scanner/Epson C60 printer.

Anyone knowing of a company that can provide these at good value, with good back up advice lines that are not on premium rate numbers please let me know.

Thanks in anticipation

I'm also in the same position, and have almost narrowed it down to Mesh. But do read some dodgy after sales support complaints on the forums, BUT their kit is top notch using branded components and very good well known motherboards ....

Plus I like their NEC TFT's which have ace write ups, probably the best around ........

Mesh prices are very competetive, their online change spec system for ordering is very good plus with a 3 year warranty I don't think you can go far wrong.

My only gripe is that their machines don't have USB's on the front of the cases and XP come's in the form of a recovery disk.

Also consider - www.novatech.co.uk or look at www.dabs.co.uk or www.jungle.com .......

good luck !

Still using a Mesh PC that we bought nearly six years ago. It has so far survived daily family use, with very few problems ......... bet that's torn it !

Also perhaps worth adding that our HP 820 Cxi printer has been equally reliable, throughout the same period of hard use.

Got an Evesham PC and well chuffed with the machine, the Tech Support and customer services.

Only problem I've found with the Evesham is the difficulty in upgrading, but you get that with most labelled PCs.

I bought an Evesham PC last October after a recommendation from a friend (and also reading the PC mags' customer satisfaction surveys). Haven't had much need to use their tech support yet, but when I phoned to tell them they hadn't supplied a USB cable with the printer it was immediately dispatched with a letter of apology. So far......so good !

I bought from Mesh 18 months ago, and overall I'm pleased with the quality.
I did need a new motherboard soon after delivery, and they took it back for this rather than an on site repair. The technical assistance line took 30mins. holding each time I rang (which was several, dealing with the faulty motherboard), listening to how important my call is.
The only other minor criticism is that on delivery they had'nt installed the drivers for the monitor, so I had 19 very flickery inches.

It seems to me that a lot of these companies now do very good deals it terms of spec for your money, but they are not too keen on after sales support. I recently had a long chat with Time computers - the spec was very good, they even offered to throw in extras as soon as I appeared to be hesitating but I wasn't very impressed by their potential after sales service. Which is why I generally now buy component parts and build my own.

This site may be helpful for opinions - although it may only be the extrmists who contribute:

I always used to build or uograde myself, but now days the big players can buy the components with such a discount its just not worth going down the DIY route anymore.

Looking in magazines like MicroMart which has hundreds of adds each week from part suppliers, adding up the cost its maybe the odd £50 cheaper than buying from, say, Mesh, Evsesham, Time etc ...

At least buying a complete system you are avoiding the almost enviteable conflict of some parts that always seemed to happen building myslef. Plus companies like Mesh tell you excatly what the put in their machines, make and model of motherboard etc, and you can read the reviews on sites like www.tomeshardware.com to decided what is the better machine based on its spec ....
