What is the best way for a Brit to get a SIM card for the USA for just one month's use?

Goto Walmart, best buys.. there are Pay as you go sim cards.. not bad.. i used T-mobile for month..there are many packages.. BUT make sure u get GSM ... NOT CDMA..

Recently stayed in San Francisco, just inside Chinatown. A corner shop did just this for $59,which gave us a month's worth of calls and data _ Lycamobile, I think it was.

I use an international roaming SIM Card called XXSIM. I used it last year in US and they have unlimited data
