Microsoft/Lumia Problems

Two things happened to me today, both leaving me completely unable to operate, and both the result of Microsoft's useless, arrogant attitude to the poor suckers who buy their products.

I live in a sea of Apple products owned by people around me, and until now have defended MS, in spite of their inability to realise what irritates people into red mists of rage.

I bought an Asus laptop least year, with W10 installed. A major update was done last night without my permission (I know, my fault, I forgot to block updates) so that when I opened up this morning I get a load of geeky crap about all the new excitements awaiting me, the principal one being that my desktop picture has been replaced.

The licensed software I use has lost its licence keys, which are locked up in my office 1,000 miles away. So I now cannot use the software which is the bedrock of my business. The laptop is behaving strangely in a number of ways, most of which will probably turn into frustrating faults in a day or two.

My Microsoft Lumia 640 phone has Denim; when I bought it directly from MS last year the offer included a free upgrade to W10 "within a few weeks". This has not happened and as far as i can tell never will.

Now, after 8 months of accessing emails (IMAP account) the Lumia will not access emails due to Error 80072F06; "there is a problem with the certificate for ..... You can try turning off WiFi and then turning it back on again, or just wait a little while and try to sync again."

Neither of these did any good, of course. The internet reveals that this problem goes back at least 5 years, during which time MS have done nothing to respond to requests for help, or indeed requests to put it right.

The MS website promises great things by way of help, but when one tries to obtain this, every single avenue is closed.

So my advice is, please learn by my mistakes, and never, ever, buy a MS product, because sooner or later you will be binning it.

For your Asus laptop with W10, have you considered/tried "System Restore" to a previous date - you shouldn't lose saved work but things like updates are removed, allowing you to return to an earlier happier state. Assuming System Restore is still available in W10 - In W7 it's - Control Panel - Recovery - etc. At some stage you will have disable updates. HTH LFH.

Many thanks for the tip, and I'll do that, although with a degree of nervousness!
