Skype, no choice to update.
Now it wants me to tick updates without any option to ask me.
I use Skype many hours a week so don't want to be too high handed, but I don't want things updating just when they think they will. One thing is that I may find FF is not my browser, or there's something in conflict with my Kaspersky. Who knows? I wouldn't if it was automatic.
World's gone mad.

I've been having trouble with Skype recently.
My usually well-behaved PC has been sounding its "fault" alarm. The error log reveals a load of code about Skype. Not sure what's up, but it's a pain.
I tried removing and reinstalling. Didn't help. Somewhere I've got the installer for a much older version - I may try going back to that.

keef, I would be very interested to hear the results.
Given that Skype has allowed me an almost vicarious means of living, I'd be kind of lost if it becomes a secret enemy.
Now I find that my provider has dropped a bombshell, Plusnet's no contract deal was expensive, but handy since I had no means of knowing how long I could borrow this house. Now they want more money and a contract and the MD says he's quite happy for me to bow out without cost. That's big of him, but such a pain since I've used them for longer than a BT contract.
When will things just stay the same?

MS are not keen on people using older versions of Skype, as they improve things in the background so they rapidly become incompatible.
Skype updates will not change your default browser.
You can disable Skype auto-update in settings.

Well, the latest version of Skype (7.8.80.102) came with various traps - such as 'make MSN my home page' and 'make bing my default search engine' - which had to be 'unchecked' to prevent such changes being made....

Yes, but unfortunately is not only MS playing that game, see Adobe and others.

If this is the case then that's okay, though The Rivetess has advised me the costs for Skype phone have gone up. There's a surprise. But stuck with it cos of the convenience of just clicking and talking hands free while on the PC.
