Techie Question

Have tried this on Tek-Tips without any joy, anyone here familiar with the issue?

TIA

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good 'how to' in terms of making the default screensaver for W2K PC's (using system policies from an NT4 PDC) a specified (ss3dfo.scr) with a defined image, that needs to be copied to the local machine?

Hi

What kind of environment are you in? How many PC's? Is it a workgroup or domain? and if so NT4 Server or Win2k server?

You cant centrally manager this if you are not in a domain situation, if you are, then it will depend on whether you are using a windows 2000 server (group policy) or an NT server

If you are in a workgroup, then on each machine, you need to open the management console - start > run > MMC > enter > File > add/remove snap-in > add > Group policy

You can change the screensaver settings there for that computer

Thanks, NT4 Domain, W2K PC's (600 of them) we use system policies already where it is possible to specify the default screensaver, timeout etc which we do.

What we're really looking for is a way to specify the bitmap image that is used on the ss3dfo screensaver and make this the default.

One would (I think ) have to push in an entry into HKCU\ControPanel\ScreenSaver.3dwhatever\Texture
for your BMP
on the logon and then make that the default screensaver.

5711N0205W,

Are you suggesting that local users change the file for the screen saver by renaming another BMP?

Does this site cover what you want?:

"Customize Your Screen Savers
While I was working as an MCSE and systems engineer for Sarcom, a user at a client site requested that I set up a screen saver on every desktop. (Users did not have access to Display in Control Panel.) I wrote a system policies template to implement a standard screen saver. Listing 2 contains an excerpt from this template. (You can find the entire script on Windows NT Magazine's Web site at http://www.winntmag.com. Enter 3799 in the instaNT Doc text box.)

This template lets you select and customize any standard Windows NT screen saver. The interface is simple. The Screen Saver tab in Display provides options for setting up the screen saver. You select the screen saver you want to run (under Settings, you can customize each screen saver), timeout period, whether to make the screen saver active, and whether to make it secure. I recommend that you try the screen saver on a desktop before you implement the policy settings".
