Win8.1 auto update problem

Hi, I'm running Win 8.1. 64 bit, found just after booting this morning that my Chrome browser wouldn't start from the usual mouse click. Decided to reboot. Windows update is now apparently installing 18 updates prior to restarting. It's currently been on number 3 for ages (approx 15 mins) with the usual " Keep your PC on until this is done" message. Amyone else have this lengthy process?
What is likely to happen if I need to reboot (for example if I don't see any further progress)? I've had no other issues at all, and the PC booted normally today inside 30 seconds.

Well, I went out for a while and left it..but an hour and a quarter after I first rebooted it was still claiming to be doing update no. 3 out of 18, so I power-cycled the PC.

It booted up with a "Configuring Windows updates" message at first, followed by an automatic reboot. Everything now seems to be back to normal, and my browser is responsive again.

The only minor concern is that Windows is now, of course, wanting to install the updates it didn't install in the first place (in my shutdown options). So I might leave that for a little while to see if anyone else has problems, or whether the failed installation was down to some bit of software on my PC disappearing up its own arse. The fact that I had an issue with my browser before the original update might indicate it was a problem at my end, which manifested itself as an unresponsive application and update non-installation..

I'll report back when I get the bottle up to try it.

EDIT: Rebooted - the other fifteen updates installed ok, Windows configured itself and everything running as required in about 6 mins. So it looks like the problem was at my end.

I wonder if it "might" be related to Chrome and an auto update of that.

My main pc hung just after starting Chrome this morning, which was unusual. The pc was started several minutes before I started Chrome, so fairly sure that was the culprit.

Hi Boguing, exactly the same circumstances as mine. Booted up this morning, minute or two later started Chrome, then problems (like you, very unusual on this PC).

In future I will ensure my PC is running without any issues before I allow updates. Obvious really... doh.

had. almost the same problem on the pc. Unfortunately when trying to open windoze it now refuses to accept my password. Suggested solution was to reload Win8 but having bought it on line I didn't make a copy.

Last Attempt before taking it to someone with access to all the programing kit; what is the default password set initially by the system?

There is no default password. You set the admin password when you install.

Double helpings:

I have had the same problem with those last 3 Updates for Win 8.1 64 Bit Version: there's a link underlined in blue "Trouble shoot problems with updates" - it installs Powershell and fixes the issues, but there seems to be a prob where updates are installed; but the associated registry entries are corrupted.

The Windows fix installed the updates KB2976536 and the two others. [Edit: I had two lots of installs - but the prob was resolved when I cold re-booted] I've never used this utility before.

I do not know if the problem was specific to my set up - but clicking the link is worth a try. Win 8.1 Users I have installed KB3008627.

It was a big optional update. I installed on the 11/11/2014.

There is no default password. You set the admin password when you install.

That's correct for a clean, interactive installation from media, but it's quite possible to configure multiple systems using an unattended installation mechanism with, for example, an answer file that contains the admin username and password. This could (not saying it is) be used by an OEM builder so that there could be a default admin password.
