MacOS / Chrome Issues

Evening all,

I have a 2013 MBA, running Mavericks (10.9.4) and my browser of choice is Chrome (v37). All has been fine until the last couple of weeks, where Chrome freezes up at least once a day. It can be on any site, but seems worse on things like DailyMail, Ebay and FB (don't judge me!). I've tried updating Chrome, removing the older version (36) and deleting and reinstalling the latest version. I've also tried disabling shockwave player via the chrome://plugins/ page and deleting all extensions.

Nothing has worked. I'm relatively computer literate and have looked through a few search results for solutions but am pretty stumped. Any help much appreciated.

Disclaimer: Make sure you have a decent backup as I'm pointing you in the direction of hidden system folders here.... any and all of the below is strictly at your own risk....

My suggestion would be to delete Google Chrome and all its little hidden files too, i.e. something along the following lines....

1. Go to Applications and delete Google Chrome
2. Whilst in the finder, choose Go -> Go To Folder and enter "~/Library" and....

Open the "Application Support" folder and trash anything that mentions Google

Go back and open the "Preferences" folder and trash anything that mentions Google (typically for stuff in here you are looking for items named in a convention com.google or com.google.somethingelse)

Go back and open open the "Caches" folder and trash anything that mentions google (you'll probably find the naming convention is similar to Preferences)

Go back and open the "Saved Application State" and ....

Go back and trash the "Google" folder at the main level

Go back and drill down to "Speech/Speakable Items/Application Speakable Items" and trash the Google Chrome folder.

3. Download the latest chrome

Thanks Mixture - I may have to do something similar.

I am having similar problems with Chrome. Gradually through the day my computer gets slower and slower, and when I start in the morning (it is left on overnight) more often than not it is frozen (even on warm nights ). I often get the "Aw Snap" message - probably between 5 and 20 times a day (and I respond with "Aw fcuk, not again"). I have gone through basic troubleshooting and eliminated the obvious issues, which seems to correct the issue for about a day.

I now run CCleaner every morning and the Google Chrome Internet Cache is huge compared to previous IE experiences. I converted to Chrome about 3 months ago from IE, but I am about to trash this experiment. I find IE far more stable and quicker.

Hi Mixture,

Thanks for the suggestion. I followed your steps faithfully, deleted the whole shebang, emptied the trash, then restarted, re-downloaded and the first web page I loaded crashed it.

I actually think I'll have to give up with chrome and go back to safari

Hi Straighten Up,

Is the crash happening on sites that use Shockwave/Flash or any sites ?

I hadn't been using it for ages - just using Safari. This evening, I clicked a link from mail which opened up in Chrome (credit expert), and then I added tabs for PPrune and Daily Mail and it crashed while I was flicking through them. I had been interacting with all three sites for a few minutes before this happened. I think it may be the DM that is the culprit on Chrome - not sure if that is a flash/shockwave site or not.

Previously I had disabled shockwave through the chrome settings and this didn't stop the problem either, although as this is a new version following your previous suggestion I assume it may be back to the default.
