Virus

I am troubled by a virus that acts as an ad popup and calls itself downloaditkeepo. It is very annoying and stops me from seeing what I need, constantly opens new webpages etc. Highlights key words, brings popup ads, bad stuff. I found a program and deleted it but it still seems to be there. Anyone had similar?

I had to deal with some thing similar recently, the bloody thing was so invasive that in the end I had to resort to a system restore to a date before the problem arose.

Just for future reference, system restores are not an acceptable means of resolving a virus infection.

Infact the first thing you should do if you detect a virus is to delete all your historical system restore points because you don't know if you can trust them.

Its not a virus as such, but a pervasive browser hijack

Browser Hijacked Fixed

Usually if your browser is hijacked you try to remove it using the TDSSKiller. Once you scan and you saw Malicious File cure it, if it shows suspicious file just skip it.

Additional Security tips for hijacked browsers.

So once everything is cured, remove the TDSSKiller from its location.

Select new restore point so you can have a clean timeline

Check windows update website for updates, it will be your 1st line of defense

I recommend you use MBAM or Malwarebytes Anti Malware. It scan or find most active malware in your system
You can download Secunia Online Software Inspector - this software generate reports about majority infection in your pc. Most infections are not OS problem but acquired through application likce quicktime, java, pdf, iTunes etc.

I saw this the other day, it was just a firefox plugin that put ads all over every page and launched popups constantly. Spammy malware, but not a virus.
IE is actually better than Firefox at dealing with stuff like this now
