Firefox problem ?

Firefox.

When clicking on a 'link', or attempting to open another programme, I often get a message that ......."Firefox is already open in another programme and not responding, close down that programme or re-start your system" ( or words to that effect )

I don't know what other programme is being referred to, and I have no option but to re-start the computer.

For instance - I open an e-mail in Thunderbird, and try to follow a 'link', then get that message.

Doesn't happen every time.

Clues appreciated. Thanks.

FF takes a few moments to shut down - I sometimes get that message if I try to launch FF within a few seconds of closing it down.

It's possible that you have a "minimised to the point of invisible" instance running, or perhaps you have a browser helper app that isn't shutting down cleanly, leaving the FF process in a waiting state.

Go to Task Manager, Applications and see if FF is running. If not, go to the processes tab and kill the Firefox.exe process, if there. If there's no process running, then you should be able to launch it again. You shouldn't have to restart Windows to shut down the browser.

I regulary had that problem, but not since upadting the latest version of Firefox. It might just be a coincidence.

Go to "Help"
In the drop down box click on "About Firefox"

I keep the Task Manager running and frequently find that Firefox is still running several minutes after supposedly shutting down.

Just close the process and it's gone.

I am on the Beta update update channel so it has been through several versions yet this still keeps happening.

Since upgrading to Firefox 29.0.1 the Pprune page formatting is variable with limits to the number of pages viewed. This appears to be linked to the option to select 40 posts per page and sometimes related to login status.
Has 'HTML disabled' (posting rules) anything to do with this?
Internet Explorer has no problem with this aspect.

This problem started for me when I upgraded to 29.0.1, was a PITA so I downgraded back to 28 and everything normal again!

I'll refuse all downloads until I know they've fixed it.

Anyone who hates the latest version of Firefox: take the LTS version and get security updates too.

Fantastic !! I wasn't getting anywhere with the Task Manager suggestion - got to Task Manager and didn't know what to do - seemed to say that nothing was still going, but FF still demanded a re-start.

I was just about to throw it all away and go back to Chrome, when the suggestion try the Version 28 option - see above - came along, followed by your LTS suggestion.

'course I couldn't download because halfway along the message came back, close down or re-start etc. so I ditched FF and went back to Chrome to download FF LTS, that (seems ? ) to have worked. 24 hrs so far with no repetition, whereas all last week it was happening everytime I tried to open another site.

The old story -WTF do "they" have to change everything ?

Many thanks, hopefully that's solved my problem - for now !!
