Teddy bear icon file
Hi everyone. Sorry if this topic has come up here previously, as I haven't visited the computer issues forum before. Anyhow, here's my question:
We were recently sent an email from people we know purporting to be a virus warning, saying that we should find and delete a file called something like 'jdfgmgr.exe' which had a teddy bear icon associated with it.
I did that, and a few hours later we received an apology from the people who sent us the original email, saying they had been the victims of a hoax, and that that file is one needed by the computer so it shouldn't have been deleted.
We've continued to operate the computer as normal for a couple of weeks and nothing seems to have changed.
Would someone who knows about this please let us know what that file does, whether it's important to replace it, and if so, can I copy it from our other computer and just stick it on this one?

It's the Microsoft Java deBUG-GER (stupid censorship) for windows - some Java code may use it, some may not, so deleting it may cause you grief from time to time. You can restore this file by reinstalling Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

Worth virus checking just in case. Like the best lies, this one has an element of truth...
The W32/Magistr-A virus and W32.Efortune.31384@mm (and most probably others) are known to specifically target jdbgmgr.exe

I always say visit http://www.symantec.com/avcenter if you ever get a virus email "my friend says.....".

Google works fine for me. If the hype and spelling mistakes don't give it away ("IBM says that it will destroy your computer", "Microsoft says that it cannot be removed") then just cut'n'paste the subject line that the chain E-mail is warning you about - you'll get 10 zillion hits telling you that it's a hoax. Takes about five seconds...

My goon of the week award goes to a guy in Air Canada who managed to forward this "warning" to everybody in his company phonebook, we ended up with a copy of this message with over a 1000 other email addresses on it......................

The great "Reply To All" brainfade is the one I hate. Get a large enough distribution list (100+) and you'll definitely get
(a) Several people using "Reply to All" rather than "Reply" and thereby spamming the whole department
and
(b) One pillock clicking on "Reply To All" while sending abuse to person (a) about their inability to click on reply to sender...
