No sound from ipad MOVs with either VLC Player or Quicktime (Windows XP)

I am managing a friend's troublesome computer; Gigabyte MoBo with onboard sound (Realtek). I cannot get it to produce any decent volume sound from MOVs transferred the friend's ipad. Some Youtube videos play audio OK, some don't. And the most weird: I created an MP4 of a movie (on my computer) and the intro by the TV station about the classification came out very very quiet and scratchy but the movie itself had great audio. This was all in the one file.

I have updated the MoBo drivers for the Realtek HD audio manager as well as the Intel graphics driver but to no avail.

Before I try FFdshow, any clues or suggestions from the floor? BTW, all the offending files play OK on my Win XP machine.

I know this problem will be instantly fixed when I go to Windows 8.1 but that will be later!
