New .whatever addresses

A question to the knowledgeable. I was watching a TV ad where an internet provider was offering ' .whatever' addresses such as [email protected] or [email protected] and so on.....Are these new domains other than .com, .net, etc etc, or are they just piggy-backing on the old domains in a virtual way such as many mobile phone companies do with the legacy networks ?

ICANN has created around 2000 new top-level domains (gTLD's) and is selling each one off to the highest bidder. It's sold around 70 of the 680 that have been bid for so far. You can see the list here.
