Windows Update Problem KB2862330

Last week my computer, running Windows 7, downloaded a large number of updates including the above. Since then the computer boots to W7 OK but then slows to crawl or a complete stop with HD at full throttle all of the time.

System restore, via safe mode, put it back to where it was operating ok but I have been unable to prevent the updates being installed again on closing down & opening up.

I have changed the windows update to manual and unchecked the individual updates boxes on the windows update list and selected ok. But if I re-open windows update I find it says manual update but all the download boxes are checked again. I'm in a vicious circle that I can't get out of.

KB2862330 is said to be the culprit. Lot of mentions on Microsoft Community with varying effects including the blue screen of death. Microsoft are said to have ackowledged the problem but no definite solutions yet.

Anyone else having this problem? Will I have to re-load Windows 7?

There's a few things in this article that may help. I've certainly found it useful for various WU problems.

Unable to install updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows Update Problem KB2862330

Absolutely. My laptop has gone slightly crazy since that same download.
For no apparent reason it will stop abruptly and I'll get a message saying "....check that new hardware or software is properly installed...." Also, the formatting of my Word files is changed and I cannot print an e-mail massage but I can print any attachment - crazy.

I was going to take my laptop to a repair guy tomorrow but now I'll hold off until something 'official' comes out of Microsoft.

In the meantime, if anyone can shed further light on this matter - particularly a proper fix - please let us know.

Thanks for the link I'll look into that. I did try a fix from Microcsoft to correct the problem with controlling what was downloaded via the Windows Update dialog box but that didn't correct the fault there.

Article on this problem here-
Microsoft Confirms KB2862330 Windows 7 Update Problems
with link within it to
Task sequence fails in Configuration Manager if software updates require multiple restarts

Are they referring to the system configuration manager? If I stop the process of configuration on start up then that would stop the updates installing? But what do I stop - Windows Installer?

My problem appears to be solved, I contacted the Microsoft Support Centre (in Malaysia) who had no knowledge of this KB2862330 conflict. I explained that it was reasonably well known and was being discussed on a number of internet forums. I sent them a screen-shot of the error meassage and got a quick reply that the problem was with the Lenovo software in my laptop.

So I contacted the Lenovo Service Centre and explained the problem to them. They asked for some details from the error message and immediately identified the problem which was, seemingly, known to them.

Lenovo sent me an e-mail with a link to the corrective software on their website. Once all required actions had been completed - it took about 45 minutes - my laptop was again behaving normally. Hope this helps.

Set aside a day last weekend to sort this out only to find that my laptop started and worked fine. I seem to have prevented the laptop installing the upgrades though they still appear in the windows update window including KB2862330 though the latter is unchecked presumably by MS.

Had some slow running - but not as bad as before - yesterday but seemed to be caused by virus program undertaking a full scan..

Thanks for the assistance.
