Power Line Connectors (PLCs)

Ideally I need to add a PLC to a 2 unit network, but the manufacturer no longer exists. Is it a case of scrap existing and buy new or will a new unit be compatible (ie 'join' my existing network?

Thank god. Hope more suffer a similar demise. Nasty things them PLCs.

Take the hint and run some proper structured cabling. You'll thank me in the long run.

Nope.

I'm with mixture on this. Nasty noisy spectrum-polluting things. Should be illegal.

HomePlug powerline networking adaptors buying advice - PC Advisor

Compatibility betweeen standards

In order to ensure compatibility between products from different manufacturers, most products have adopted a standard networking protocol called HomePlug. In fact, the terms ‘powerline’ and ‘HomePlug’ are often used as though they’re interchangeable, but there are competing standards. HomePlug is the most popular, though.
You can mix and match Powerline adaptors running at different speeds and from different manufacturers – as long as they all support at least HomePlug AV. Naturally, faster adaptors can talk to slower ones only at the lower speed.

Beware of older kits still on sale that are based on an earlier standard called HomePlug 1.0. These run at a maximum speed of 85Mbps – which will probably still be adequate for many home users – but they’re not compatible with faster HomePlug AV products running at 200Mbps or more. They'll co-exist on the same mains wiring, but cannot talk to each other. Most home users should probably stick with newer HomePlug AV products in order to keep things simple.

Thanks ss - we will ignore the 'righteous brothers'

I guess I need to buy a pair and see if the 'Homeplug' version is really compatible. The tech spec says Homeplug AV1 but the set is 200mb.

Old Homeplugs and the current range are not compatible. I have 3 (one from modem router, one in to Youview, one in to back up pc) and needed another one as the Panasonic in the far room did not like my bt wi-fi..

I rang Solwise to query this and they confirmed it. My solution was to add an extra switch in the room with the Pana and the pc, and to wire from that switch. Cheaper than buying 4 new Solwises/Homeplugs.

Now I've said that, GG and mixture will try to throttle me over the Internet.

Nah, in keeping with the aviation theme of the forum, I've had a word with some bloke with an American accent who sits in a bunker.
