Keep taking the tablets
I'm struggling with a newly purchased tablet running Android (which I'm beginning to hate with a passion). Having at great length managed to install some new programs, they either start with this message or go to it when I try to do anything "Unfortunately (whatever) has stopped". Then I have to click OK 
and it's back to the menu!
Anything I might be doing wrong?

Could be anything from a faulty tablet to no internal memory left because you've downloaded too much.
Go to >SETTINGS >SD CARD AND PHONE STORAGE
If the Internal Phone Storage is under 20MB you will be having trouble.
Go to >APPLICATIONS >MANAGE APPLICATIONS check > ALL and see how many you can move to the SD card (assuming you've pluggd a nice fat juicy SD card in)
Then go to > MANAGE APPLICATIONS and start deleting DATA and CACHE
Most tablets have a far too small internal memory and no way to move them to the SC card unless you root it. As someone who loves lots and lots of stuff this is irritating.
Having said that I'm very pleased with my cheapo Android tablet (the second one from Maplins, the first one didn't work and was replaced).

My IT man purchased an extra RAM chip for me, but then found that it wasn't a simple Plug 'n Play exercise, but a major motherboard rebuild - which he wouldn't do, and ASUS have confirmed that it is impossible to upgrade this model with extra memory.
However - there is a slot for an SD card, so could I improve my situation in the same way that has been suggested to 'vulcanised' above ? I also have 2 USB slots available.

Wacky. We upgraded our EeePC to 2GB by just opening the cover on the bottom and replacing the DIMM with one from my old laptop; I guess the new ones removed that handy feature to save money.
I don't think adding an SD card will work, since it won't increase the RAM available to programs. You could create a swap file on there so RAM can be written out to the flash memory, but I don't know whether that would really be any faster than the hard drive, or whether the continual writes would just trash the card.

Not all Asus EEE PC's are created equal. Mine (7" model) also has the memory chips soldered to the motherboard. It may be that other 7" models, or the larger ones which followed are more flexible in their adaptability. A cute little device when I first got it - swept aside by the tablets of today. However some people are still doing interesting things with them. One needs to be be fluent in Linux apparently which rather excludes self.....

Most unusual behaviour. I lean towards implicating a faulty device to start with. If you can advise on the brand name and model, it may allow a comparison with others here who perhaps have the same. (In practise I find that they are all just a little bit different).
My Samsung Galaxy Tab 10 and 7 were both relatively easy to set up, and have been more or less co-operative - given my limitations in coming to understand yet another operating system. (I started with TRSDOS 1.3)

Aha ! 'Trashdos', I remember it well. In fact this whole situation with Android has been very reminiscent of the old days. I have been half expecting to be offered Biorhythms and Space Invaders software. It's all a throwback experience.
It has 1gb memory and it's indicating over 600mb is free, so I would gave thought that was enough to run a small stockwatcher program? It starts up fine, but as soon as I try to add any stock that I want (instead of the preloaded US stuff) it throws its legs in the air with its own equivalent of the BSOD.
It doesn't help that the so-called user manual is shirt pocket size and the icons printed are almost meaningless.
