Lost BIOS password....here is help
These days all of us have a multitude of passwords.
The worst scenario one may have to face is the situation that the BIOS is deadlocked with a password and this one is not available anymore.
Here is a list of passwords which may provide the necessary access again; these passwords here are so-called Masterkeys which allow to bypass the user-defined password.
Do not type the *
Award:
Just check the next combination if one does not work
* j262
* lkwpeter

IBM Aptiva:
no password required, instead have both mousebuttons pressed during boot-up
Toshiba Laptops:
no password required, instead press left SHIFT key during boot-up
If all above fails or if you have a different BIOS, you need to kill the CMOS contents.
How to proceed....check your motherboard manual if there is a jumper to Clear CMOS and select the default position for about 60 minutes.
The BIOS reverts to manufacturers setting.
If this procedure is not possible, well, here is the "hardcore" version...
Use a MS-DOS floppy which contains the DEBUG prgram and boot the PC.
At the DOS-prompt type (without the *)
* debug
* o 70 2E
* o71 FF
* Q
Remove the floppy and reboot again, no password-request should come up now.
There is still the chance that all this did not work, last resort is the erasure of the BIOS via QBasic (reverts to manufacturer setting).
Use a MS-DOS floppy which contains the QBasic prgram and boot the PC. At the DOS-prompt start QBasic and type the following two commands (again without the *)
* 10 OUT &H70,17
* 20 OUT &H71,0
Execute the little program, remove the floppy and reboot. That was it.
Now here is the final warning, if you use any of the CLEAR CMOS ideas, be aware that also your harddrive data will be erased. It may be a good idea to have all details in hardcopy before you continue with the aforementioned.
May be it is the time now that some wake up and make a hardcopy of the BIOS and staple the printouts to the motherboard manual....
