Ubunto 12.10 Probs

Just a heads up for anyone who has upgraded to Ubuntu version 12.10 from earlier versions. I have encountered problems with mounting USB memory sticks in the new version.

I'm not alone - Hopefully the bug will get fixed quickly.

Interesting. I installed 12.10 on my laptop and it discovers all the USB devices I've plugged in with no problem. Including a couple of USB sticks.

Did you do an upgrade or fresh install?

They have LTS versions of Ubuntu for a reason. You're always going to me more of a guineapig if you use the bleeding edge stuff (and Ubuntu has a tendency to be a bit of a guineapig's distro because they tend to prioritise growing the featureset over stability).

Alternatively, just download a copy of OpenBSD if you want stable with a capital S. Although if you're a child of the magenta line kind of guy, it might not be your cup of tea.

Mixture - Yes an over zelous person

Yes Its on my Acer aspire One - one much loved and very useful. it may be MK1 useritis - I've gone back to Ver 12.04 and every thing's functioning normally.

I'm by nature a grumpy "Person" and I felt a bit "sore" that such a bug ! had been missed.

I am am not a " A child of the Magenta" kind of guy - A very important video (and not just for Pilot's by the way, Engineers/Software developers Microsoft et al. ), my programming "Skills limited" go back to the PET or should I say "Wright Flyer II" - So I totally agree .

Its that itch to explore that killed the cat (and me) .- PS Cherokee 140- 2 Hours - C150 (Aero-bat) I flew it sideways, 2H and best of all ( T. Moth 55 Mins - The best machine designed by man or other life form)

[As a programmer, I was literally a "Rudder & Stick man" - Further edit[ RG it was an upgrade].

Don't blame you for being grumpy, personally that's my gripe with most Open Source projects.....there's no shortage of people spewing out lines of code, but the QA tends to be a bit hit and miss (assuming any human QA goes on at all, many projects just try to automate QA.... and as we know.... GIGO).

That's why I tend to favour Apple products and their OS X operating system. A decent GUI, properly QA tested against the hardware.... and there's easy access to BSD behind the scenes for those times when you feel like writing some scripts.

I have to agree with your comments about Apple. Only one drawback; and thats cost.

PS I do like many OS programs - DigiKam is a good example.

Oh only if Canonical would just stick to doing what they used to do well. OK well before "Unity" - Mint beckons me with its relatively trouble free implementation of Linux.

Upgraded my old netbook yesterday (in-place upgrade, not a reinstall), but it seems fine so far. The default mount points have changed to /media/<user>/<device>, but I've tried two devices so far and both are working. One is an old USB key, one is a new Philips MP3 player that acts as a USB drive.

The upgrade process did reinstall more stuff than I wanted, including things I'd previously removed (LibreOffice, apport reporting, zeitgeist logging), but I'm so used to customising systems to my taste that it's no biggie.
