VISTA on a Sony Vaio
The task bar is set to be at the bottom. It's set to pop up and stay on top -- just like every computer I have. However, this one has the items on the right: Speaker, Net, Battery etc., stacking up into a second line. There's not many of them, (8) so there would easily be room for a longer row. But noting I can do will make them form into a long single row.
They were originally, but then I left this with the kids while back in the US.
Any ideas how I can make that bottom row skinny again?

Or, more likely, grasp the top edge of the taskbar and drag it so that it compresses the bar. Your icons will spread out accordingly. Ensure you haven't got the taskbar 'locked' though.
p.s. - once fixed, you can remember to Rock the Casbah.
/oh sorry, I mean Lock the Taskbar

Yes, been those routs thanks chaps. Task-bar will broaden, and the icons will even reach a single column - but when I swipe it down again, it stops at two rows thick.
Odly, the start button seems to be taking up that double height as well, despite the quick launch icons being set small and taking a normal single row.
In addition to this, the open browsers are displayed on the task-bar - UNDER the quick launch items. Don't recall this being the case, but I've got nowt to compare it with unless I ask the Rivetess in TX.
However, closing the browser and losing that FF emblem and label still doesn't allow the task-bar to go to one line.
FF - Tools - Options all looks normal.
View, can't see anything here either.
Start - Properties. Nothing there leaping out at me.
It's been like this for months, and just annoyed me one too many times, but unless any light-bulbs come on over heads, better get back to the old tome - time is running out.
EDIT Strange, but there doesn't seem to be any bar to the left of the Notification Area. (The faint lines that can be pulled to stretch it. ) I'm not hiding any items.

Try:
Ensure Toolbar is unlocked. (Right Click to check. There's also very nearly a computer joke, there).
Right click Task Bar|View|Small Icons.
I believe you may have Large Icons selected for the Task Bar. Toolbar needs to stay unlocked.

Controversial, moi?

I had this happen once and my solution involved unlocking the Taskbar (if locked) closing the language selector (if showing is has an icon that says something like 'En') and dragging the top one of the two borders for the Quicklaunch toolbar down to the lower part of the Taskbar.
This thread offers several solutions and one of them should work for you depending what is causing the anomaly which I have seen more than once.
Good luck!

So, it seems it's a known fault. That's a comfort, though getting rid of the double line would be even more cozy.
I will look at it when the wine, hooooosed into me by a fellow Ppruner this evening, has been filtered by my beleaguered kidneys . . . or is it liver . . . or kidneys and liver. Whatever, my brain has ceased to be connected to my fingers.
Long live Pprune, I say.
Wibble.

I have the same problem from time to time, I don't know what mis-key or keys I hit to start the problem, or which correct sequence of events eventually sorts it out, it just happens without my apparent direction.
I blame Bill Gates.

I think I've managed to reproduce what you are complaining about and Mike-Braknell's solution above appears to work ok.
Put your cursor over the top of the task bar upper border. A double headed arrow appears, left click and just drag it down towards the bottom of the screen. Everything then just pops back to 'normal'.

Nope - tried it again for luck, but stops at two lines.
WORSE STILL THIS MORNING. Fired up and nothing seemed to be working. Thought it was just task bar issues, but nothing much worked. Got going in save mode - couldn't use big screen. What a mess.
No other computers in UK and I'm holding lot's of money for things people have purchased. No other means of banking here. Never been in this position before because of masses of computers at home.
Trying to roll back the date. And praying. Oh, and the task bar has gone white.

Now, here's a thing!
Well, it might even be the start key.
When the cursor went white, it allowed me to see a tiny vertical line just to the right of the Start button. Remember, the button is two lines big - and round.
I simply pulled that line LATERALLY to the RIGHT. PRESTO! everything back to normal. Opened progs now contained within the taskbar, and the Start button is now small and rectangular, being contained in one line. Thingies on the right are now obviously all on one line.
Now all I've got to do is find out how to turn the background of the bar to black again.
