Ipad or Galaxy 10.1?

I bought the original Galaxy Tab and I am now looking to buy the Tab '2' the 10.1. Lot's of confusing write ups around facing the iPad off against the Tab.

What would you buy?

However, in response to your question, I would say iPad.

It's a great platform, designed from scratch as an integrated system, and the app store is very popular with many well put together apps available for download.

The problem with Android is the separation of Operating System and Hardware, which inevitably adds to the bloat and complexity of the Operating System due to the need to support a wide range of hardware.

I will go for android platform. ipad is good but it is hard to use as it limit lots of app or extra money needed. (you can choose it if you can find the way to use and update more app/functions) more open for galaxy.

The answer depends on what you actually want to do with it.

If you want a web browser, and a crude email program, and stuff like that, the Ipad delivers all that in a very slick package, and the hardware feel and quality are excellent.

The downside of the Ipad is that it is severely functionally crippled by the Apple politburo. The "paradigm" is that each data file is contained solely within each app (with some exceptions, which often don't work properly) and this can give rise to some really irritating situations. Another little irritation is that the 3G version has SMS functionality blocked by Apple - unless you jailbreak it.

One has to appreciate that it is basically a media player / web browser and such, not a computer.

I got an Ipad initially for use as a browser for doing a JAA IR online question bank, and for that it was brilliant. It is also a good document reader.

I don't think the cost of apps is an issue; most of them are very cheap. But because most IOS apps are severely crippled functionally, one neds up installing several apps which are quite similar, just to get several features one wants.

It depends if you want to spend your life working with the iPad, or tweaking Android so it works properly or spend time stripping out malware and viruses... Apples so-called closed system has it's detractors, (see below) but in the real world it's a huge advantage. (ANdroid is no more open than iOS in reality - Google still pulls the strings)

Erm, you do understand its developers who write apps, not Apple. Therefore if you've got grief with the apps, its the developers you should be moaning at.

And as someone who has recently taken ownership of a Blackberry Bold 9900, I can tell you, both the Apple platform and the Apple app selection and quality is so much better than the Blackberry equivalent (you have to reboot the thing each time you want to uninstall an app ... I mean, come on !).

Have recently googled the same question and looked at what the "experts" say. From the googling, I deduced that they were 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other.
SWMBO has an ipod touch 32 and loves it, I have a Samsung phone and think it is great. So in terms of home use, either the ipad2 or the 10.1 would do. I have marginally more adaptability than SWMBO, so we'll go for the Apple - although I detest their highly unlawful RPM.
They are all a complete rip off as "real" light weight lap top type computers give you more functionality for half the price.

Good thread ... I'm going through the same question -

Although now Air Nav Pro have launched their excellent Nav software for Android it still seems like its not as good as the Ipad version.

I am a real Android fan (Galaxy SII phone) and really hate the Apple philosophy BUT I think they have got it right with the Ipad .... so many dedicated Apps written for it, especially for GA ... and additionally things like cockpit mounts and covers are freely available for the Ipad ...

The other consideration is that the Ipad 3 has much better resolution, its significantly better than the Ipad 2 and Tab 10.1's screen especially when viewing sectional charts on it .....

I hate the fact I HAVE to buy the Ipad 3G(4G) version to get the GPS built in .... BUT I am very very close to buying one now!!!

I went to John Lewis today to play with the Samsung Tab 10.1 .... in isolation it is very good ... BUT when you pick up an Ipad 3 straight afterwards their is no comparison with the screen and slick interface ... The Samsung has a subtle lag and the resolution just doesn't compare ...

OFSO - I totally agree .... I'm a hardened Android user and dont own anything Apple .... BUT the Ipad for GA and GPS moving map stuff is the better device ... as much as I hate to say it!!!

Have you considered the ASUS Transformer Prime TF700? It will be released in late May apparently. You can check out the current model Transformer Prime in the shops now. They both have a keyboard docking station with a USB, SD and video port and claimed 16 hour battery life. The use a quad core processor and the TF700 a 2000 x 1200 screen.

Worth considering I think..

To a degree, you should also consider what other computers you will be using i.e. laptop, phone, desktop. If these are Apple devices then there are benefits available from the common(ish) interface and the iCloud sync across the devices.
