Firefox CPU hogging

XP SP3 FF 3.6.22. Suddenly today it started the old 100% hog, not responding in T Manager. Running ok in FF Safe. I don't think I have downloaded/added any themes/plug-ins/addons since yesterday when all was well.

Short of painstakingly taking off addons etc and restarting etc , anyone any other ideas?

Flash ? Is your flash up to date ? What other plugins are you running ?

Maybe time to bite the bullet and upgrade.... one of the improvements in the newer versions is in relation to the sandboxing of plugins and reduction in processing and memory requirements.

Not sure which Flash is 'now' but no 'warnings'. Which FF would you recommend? Last I saw was a beta 4.

Re Plug-ins - no change from normal yesterday to slow today.

EDIT: Flash is tickety-boo.

5! () appears to be running fine - I was obviously having a Rip van Winkle moment

Just need to find out how to sort the top bars

BOAC, at the very top left of the screen there's a tab labelled firefox, right click on the right hand end of it select 'toolbars' and click on 'menu bar', that should restore the normal menus, then you can sort out the bars from there.

GG - I found that on't internet - the 'menus' are ok, but I cannot change the size of the Google search box (it's tiny!) or move various buttons like 'Page saver' and 'Home' out of that line. Used to be able to re-arrange in previous. I guess I'll find it eventually!

encouraged by comments here, I downloaded 6.0.1. They've released 6.0.2. Seems fine by me. The way to change appearance in 6.0.1 is to right click the menu bar, click on customise, and when that box is open, you can move things around and add/remove things. I don't know about 5 as I never had 5.
I added zoom in and zoom out to my bar as it is easier than control +.
Also, add ins are available to change the sizes of things. I like one which increases text size in selected areas. However, that's on my other pc, and now I can't find it.

Likewise encouraged by your post, I fiddled with the 'offending items' and by adding another toolbar managed to move them off the Google box line, and then to another existing line, and Google is now big enough! I can relax.

I've too been noticing extreme slow running with FF.

Nothing shows up in performance monitor so it looks like the 99.x% CPU time is being spent somewhere at low level in the O/S (XP, SP3).

It may well be related to certain websites which use weird javascript or even java. I had this issue with flyingexam.com which uses massive amounts of javascript to obfuscate the questions so they can't be grabbed easily, but Vimeo may be doing it too.

It is very bad that in 2011 this still happens. You would think windoze would time-slice in some sensible way e.g. not allow any one process have 100% of CPU time especially as it is not shown in perf monitor which one is doing it (but, obviously, closing FF, eventually, does fix the issue).

Still running 3.5.1 here, without the hogging problem but it does take forever* on initial start.

* Well, a good 60 seconds.

Nothing of help, but I suffer similar problems. Other forums suggested ZoneAlarm, particularly for the problems just after start up, otherwise ‘System Idle Process’ is using 80% plus of memory with Firefox next ~ 8% around the time of the lockup – then lots of hard drive activity.
Some random web activity apparently connected with Firefox during quiet periods; now running with all Firefox auto updates off.

No hogging here. 4 FF tabs open, very little other than system idle.
XP SP 3. 4 year old basic acer. FF 6.0.1
