Uncommanded Deletions
Bit of an odd one this...
I've noticed that certain items in my "Favourites" are deleted occasionally, without my input. The offending pages are mainly Forum links, which includes, but is not limited to: Youtube, PPRuNe, Flypast Forum, Fleabay, and several railway-related sites I frequent.
I use IE7, my AV is AVG, and firewall is ZoneAlarm.
Any suggestions or advice welcome, as I'm tearing out what little hair I have over this...
Thanks in advance,
Don

Check your Favourites folder (c drive/ users/your name/favourites).
Are the shortcuts in there, the same as you have on your IE toolbar favourites?
Are you logged in on your account or 'another' your account?

Unusual snag, so just running through some lowlevel stuff - bear with it.
Question time.
Just for a warm and fuzzy: Confirm you can find all the favorites under the default favourite’s location.
C\Users\<user name>\ Favourites
What version of AVG do you have installed?
Have you had a virus/trojan or similar recently, and, if so, did AVG clean it?
It could be your AV is stopping stuff.
More questions.
Has Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer?
Did a Norton or McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or activated it.)
In other news...
Give your hard drive a quick clear out - right click your HD in Explorer and select Properties|Disk Cleanup.
In IE, select Tools|Internet Options|Browsing History|Delete (or keep the delete on exit box ticked).
I recommend that you download and run Ccleaner, which really does clear away all the detritus of a day at the keyboard. Great piece of kit.
...and finally...
Check if any add-ons on the Internet explorer are causing the issue. Try opening Internet explorer in the no add-ons mode.
a) Click the Start button, click All Programs and click Accessories
b) Click System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).
Report back

Hi Spurlash2,
Despite saving the shortcuts again, once more they have gone.
They are not in the Favourites folder either.
AVG version is 10.0.1390.
No, I've had no viruses or trojans.
(Yes, I too thought it might be the AV not 'liking' various sites...)
The PC had a free version of Norton pre-installed, which was uninstalled fairly early on.
I have CCleaner, and I've just done a disk cleanup.
A thought: I also delete my Flash player cache and the cookies/ temporary internet files daily. Could either of these be the issue?

The only possible solution that I can come up with is an incorrectly set Shell Folder setting. This occurs because you may have redirected special folders using Tweak UI, or by moving the folder to another location. When this occurs, the User Shell Folder registry path is modified accordingly.
To check if your Registry setting is correct, do this:
Click Start, click Run, type Regedit.exe, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\User Shell Folders.
In the right hand pane you should see:
Favorites REG_EXPAND_SZ %USERPROFILE%\Favourites
If not, report back.
Did you try the No add-ons? make a few short cuts and see what happens.
Deleting your Flash cache (that rhymes) shouldn't affect, nor cookies or temp files. Do you use Flash Cookies Cleaner? Just curious.
Norton does have history of deleting Fave URL's, but trying to pin down an exact solution is a no joy situation at the moment.
