The catch is that in practice the strength of a non-microscopic structure made out of this material will be dictated not by the underlying strength of the interatomic bonds but by the imperfections in the material, of which there are bound to be some. Just one atom out of place could maybe cause an entire space elevator to disintegrate - not really what one wants if one is half way up.
