HP-4070 Scanner as Copier Problem

I have inherited an HP-4070 scanner which I want to use as a copier. This XP SP3 computer has two printers available: A Brother laser printer connected by a local network and an HP inkjet printer directly connected to the computer by USB.

I press the COPY button on the front of the scanner and it DOES copy.

My problem is that it prints on the wrong printer even when copying in black.

The Brother printer is set as the DEFAULT printer and is also selected in the scanner's copy window as the place to print the output. However, the output usually appears on the USB-connected inkjet printer. After the first copy, I can usually get output to appear on the network-connected laser printer.

Yes, I know this is HP software, but I'm asking this august group hoping for suggestions.

Thank you,
