CANON PIXMA MP780 multi-function 3in1

I've bought 2. The 1st for the company I work for, the 2nd when my supplier was selling them at -50% for myself. The company-bought one had to be replaced after 3 years of hard and continuous office use. The one I bought personally for use at home abruptely stopped printing last Monday, with "wrong cartridge" error on the LCD screen.

I've since contacted CANON France's service dept., who can only offer sending the MP780 to an authorised service station for repair. However, the CANON technician I had on the phone, explained that the "wrong cartridge" message may in fact signify that the complete print-head has to be replaced (so why not "print head" error or "print head needs replacing" instead of the former vague message?!

Whatever, I've tried searching for an (easy) solution on the web since, just in case the "wrong cartridge" error wasn't serious. I've cleaned the print-head with alcohol swabs, the ink cartidges themselves etc. to no avail. I've also learned how to put the MP780 into both service and factory modes and played about with these too, all to no avail.

Yesterday, I ordered a complete new CANON print-head QY6-0049-000 for this printer (total cost €75.35 inc VAT and delivery) which I should receive Thursday / Friday. Hopefully, replacement of the print-head was the source of the original problem and the solution. However, having "played about" with the service and factory settings, I'm unsure that once the new print-head is installed, that will be the end to the problem, or the beginning of resolving new problems created by gits such as myself having delved into areas restricted for CANON service technicians...?!

The company has said that they will reimburse me for the new print-head. But they replaced our old CANON MP780 with a HP multi-function product without consulting me (I have a fervent hatred of all HP appliances but especially their after-sales service).

Before installing the new CANON print-head once received, can anyone here tell me how to "completely reset" the MP780 (and whatever settings might have been tampered with inadvertently during my voyage through the "service and factory" modes...?!

Just to update anyone interested.

I received the new CANON print-head #QY6-0049-000 ordered through eparts on Tuesday 05/04, this morning Thursday 07/04. Fitted the new print-head, refitted the 5 used ink cartridges, all of which took about 2 minutes. Then waited with bated breath and much trepidation whilst the CANON PIXMA MP780 digested everything. After several minutes, it performed an automatic head-alignment, then printed a test page. After which I switched it off, then back on. Worryingly, the amber flashing light then came back on, but just for a few moments.

I've since used it to print, scan and fax normally, without problem. And "touch-wood", whatever desperate fiddling I got upto in both "service" and "factory" modes doesn't appear to have affected anything...?! But my advice to anyone desperately seeking simple solutions or work-arounds on the www as I did is: beware?! I basically tried almost everything, suggested by anyone who could type, in numerous forums etc. I was in fact desperate (remembering the HP multi-function I spent €450 on back in 2003/4 which worked for about 2 years) and then became an extremely bulky paper-weight...

I'm so happy that I took the decision (on the advice of the CANON technician) to spend €75 on the new print-head which appears to have resolved the problem. I wouldn't have bothered returning such an old printer to CANON for service and it would have ended up on the pavement* just like my old HP multifunction printer all those years ago. (* you call the council here the day before, they come and collect the appliance deposited on the pavement the next morning).

I was just looking through my old invoices. I bought my CANON PIXMA MP780 multifunction back in 2006 for €179.40 inc. VAT (reduced 50% from RRP then). So it's already almost 5 years old and was until just recently, completely reliable. All it needed was a new print-head apparently. I'm not sure anyone else here would agree, but I much prefer spending €75 on a worn-out part on a very reliable machine which might last another 5 years, comfortable with, know how to use etc., compared to buying a new machine...?!

Maintenance. That's the ticket. Why buy new when you can keep a good machine soldiering on? So, you're preaching to the converted.

Hell, I've got three perfectly reliable B757s under my beady eye that we've kept going for 28 years and there's plenty more life in the old girls yet.
