Stupid laptop keyboard

My keyboard has gone bonkers and isn't co-operating. I thought I'd ask the knowledgeable people on here if you have any advice.

I was in the middle of typing, and the laptop started making noises (like a dull "dut"). This went on for about a minute and I didn't touch anything during the "fit". Now, the keyboard seems to have reprogrammed itself in some way, and it just doesn't make sense.

The following letters are in the right place on keyboard: abcdefgh n qrst vwxyz
The other letters come up like this:
i=5, j=1, k=2, l=3, m=0, p=6, q= -, u=4

Anyone have any ideas? Pretty please? I've tried a restart with no luck. It's a windows 7 if that makes any difference.

(am currently on portable gadget)

Thanks in advance for help

I think somehow you or the machine has managed to select the option to enable numerical keys. My laptop keyboard has a red ‘fn’ (function) key which in combination with one of the top row of F keys can be used to toggle different functions hence if I press ‘fn and the ‘ins’(ert) key simultaneously, I will get precisely the result you describe.

As for the strange ‘dut’ noises, perhaps the little man inside was having a bit of a hissy fit about the weather or the FAA and hitting his head against the wall. Could you hear any ‘Dohs’ or ‘dummkopfs’ emanating form within while it was happening?
