A thread elsewhere prompts me to ask if one can do this directly?

Only way I have found is if you happen on a post by that person or do a search and then plough through threads looking for one of their posts.

There must be a quicker way?

VBulletin supports a function called Member List - which basically does what you want, i.e. find a member.

However going through the link in the FAQ produces this:

Sorry! The administrator has disabled the list of members.
- it appears that the function has been disabled in PPRuNe.

Unless one happens to be a moderator or administrator - we have the facility in the Mod CP.

do a search and then plough through threads looking for one of their posts.
It would be quicker to Show Results as posts, not threads in your search - see the check box in the advanced search page. That should bring you straight to their posts - in fact you can go straight to their profile from the search results page.

Or, if you know the person's username but cannot seem to find a post from them, add them to your buddy list using the facility in the CP, exit that, open your buddy list from the 'Quick Links' drop down and click on the blue/green online/offline light beside their name in that list which will open their profile.

vulcanised,

There must be a quicker way?

Yeah. It's called Google.

Seriously. The "built-in" PPRuNe search is lousy in comparison. If you're trying to dig up historical posts, just search for them using Google.

BOAC,

It seems BING is actually a bit more suitable for that application.....

Code:
site:pprune.org SyllogismCheck near:5 "join date"
From there, choose a thread and follow normal process to view profile.

mixture,

Entering that search string into Bing took me to a thread about a random subject on which I posted around a month and a half ago.

Your point is?

SyllogismCheck,

You do understand what the original poster of this thread wanted to do, don't you ?

He wanted to (or at least my understanding is) view the public profile of someone who's screen name he knows, but does not know (or does not remember) where he saw them post.

Therefore my understanding is that he was looking for a method to locate someone's post so that he could then view their public profile through the normal means.

I just happened to use your username as an example. But the point being is that :

Entering that search string into Bing took me to a thread about a random subject on which I posted around a month and a half ago.
Is the desired result. Because from there, your public profile is accessible without need to resort to tools that are only available to the moderators.

Quite honestly, Saab's method beats anything else hands down!

Mixture more or less has it.

I am just puzzled as to why it is not possible for provision of a simple function on the toolbar to enter a username, click on a button, and have the PP displayed.

Sorry, mixture, I do see your point now. The reason I missed it before was that I was conscious of a possible problem with your method working for vulcanised which you're probably not aware of, but which I failed to consider you'd likely not be aware of.

You see the thread to which vulcanised referred made mention of a user who had deleted all their posts and was questioning whether or not he was still a registered user. Of course, a Google or Bing search would find their posts as cached results, but linking through to the posts themselves would fail since they'd have been deleted since being cached. Hence, you'd not be able to view the posts which would contain the clickable username of the person which links to their profile. So, you see, in such a scenario your method wouldn't work. It's perfectly good otherwise, of course.

Now, it's entirely possible that vulcanised may not even have been seeking the profile of a poster who had removed all their posts, but I suppose I made an assumption that he may have been, as this was the context I took to be carried over from the other thread which he mentioned. Hence, I suggested a method which would work in such a case and regarded methods which wouldn't work as being unsuitable, leading to me questioning your suggestion in this instance.

Hopefully this explains, but I'm not too sure it does. I have a world class hangover and although I know what I'm trying to illustrate, I seem to be having difficulty converting my thoughts into words.

SyllogismCheck,

No problem. I did quietly suspect there may have been a bug or two lurking in my suggestion.

I hadn't realised we were trying to locate a user who had received the attention of the mods and hence been made to disappear.
