On desktop the program names asociated with the Icons have been replaced by the date/time the program was last used. No updates installed AFAIK

Well, Lon - here's a big leap in the dark. Let's start by assuming you are using XP SP3?
Delete ShellIconCache in your Windows directory, reboot. Report back.

If BOAC has guessed XP correctly and you have Tweak UI installed you could try repairing Icons which is the last item in the list of tweaks. If you haven’t already got TweakUI if is available as a free download.
That tweak might do what BOAC has already suggested but it’s there if you want to try.

I'm using Windows 7. GF told me she copied some MP3 files to an external HD. I think she may have moved part of the directory. I tried renaming things but although the name in the directory is correct the screen display is wrong. Not a big thing, i'm building a new PC and there were only about a dozen progs accesible from the desktop. When the new one is up and running i'll formatt the disc and re-install the software
