Laptop with no drive how to save movies?

I recently purchased a Vaio Windows 7 laptop. It doesn't have the drive for playing dvd's etc and I was happy to go with it because I have an external dvd writer.
I've tried to run CloneDVD but its too smart and warns that dvd's are protected so won't copy onto the hard disk.

Any ideas how I can get around this?

I'm beginning to wonder why companies sell laptops without the cd/dvd drive.

Cheers
SS

For business types and others who want a small, light laptop and don't need access to a CD/DVD drive day in day out.

There are more than enough external CD/DVD drives on the market for when you do need access to one.

Yes. I have actually bought an external drive, but 99.9% of the time my laptop is connected to a network so I just use a DVD drive in some other machine.
