Internet Explorer keeps deleting / will not import Favourites

After a rather unpleasant experience requiring a format of the hard drive with reinstallation of XP and other programs I now find IE8 initially started to delete my saved favourites and now will not import them from a saved location.

The story.

Being a dummy I forgot to save them before the formatting and reinstallation so I went to all the sites and saved each individually. Favourites was then exported to C Drive (Bookmark).

First time I found they had disappeared I was a little taken aback but imported them again. That seemed to do the trick for a couple of days until I opened IE to find they had disappeared again. Now they will not import when selected (file -> import / export option).

I have the bookmark on the desktop so can still go direct to the sites I want but it is a little irritating that things are not working the way they should.

Can anybody shed some light on why this is happening and what to do or where to look to solve it.

What is even stranger is that quite out of the blue all previously saved favourites are available and that is without trying to re-import them again.

Now what is that all about? Still probably better not to think about it too much

driftdown:

And why do you insist on using Internet Exploder? Have you tried Firefox?
Opera? Safari? Google chrome? There are quite a few web browsers out there which function quite nicely.

Firefox isn't infallible - it has stopped saving Bookmarks - when I click on 'Bookmark this page' - nothing happens.
