I wouldn't ask, but one is defeated.

The 'new' fairly super computer is going in all respects but the sound. Super graphics from the on-board, and a pleasing increase in general whoomph.

I HATE WD's HD. It sounds as though a drunkard has fallen into a room full of galvanized buckets, but I'll put up with that for now. (New quick format and install, so shouldn't need defrag)

Anyway, the sound didn't go, and I loaded the driver via their H-U-Display, which for some reason in is space. Very pretty. It showed me a few items, one of which I picked, and away went the sound. I didn't check the full 7.1 characteristics, or indeed the output from the other plugs, but it went in stereo - that was good enough.

Next day - Nothing. Much footling, and got nowhere. Foxconn's disc now shows no drivers available. Just nothing. Finally I removed the drivers in Device Manager in the hope it would detect their absence, and offer more. Nope. Still nothing. Left in the vacuum of space with no controls.

All I've got left to destroy is the High Definition Audio Controller in System Devices. 2 of them. But I've never zapped anything from there.

Any ideas of how to proceed? I've run setup numerous times, and all I ever get is the head up display with not a single thing to do.

I've asked W7 to look at the drivers file for an auto update, and it says they are the latest...or words to that effect.

EDIT: File waiting to be written item removed.

Totally at a loss.

Try downloading drivermax which is a free utility. It scans your hardware and shows the latest drivers for them. It also installs them as well. With the unpaid for version you are allowed to download 2 a day. It also allows you to choose to set a restore point before proceeding with the installs etc.
It picked up loads for my PC which only had generic microsoft drivers after my Win7 install.

DriverMax - free driver updates

Hi, thanks...I'll store that away if it's really free. I've mostly been invited to give them my Visa number - after a mile of questions - before anything happens. And no, I've never done that.

The sound has this moment come back. W7, probably on a reboot, left my speaker with a red line though it. Could I....? serous moment of then remembered checking though the right click stuff there. So, checked the Device Manager, and they were back! So, I'm in business...until the next time.

It really is totally free (for only 2 downloads per day though)
It does ask for an email address where it sends a validation email etc.
Have not noticed anything untoward on the spyware front either.

I discovered it the other week whilst trying to troubleshoot my DVD ROM probs after the Win7 install. So far updated every driver on my PC and most on my vista laptop. No problems so far with any of the ones I selected.

x213a, I think you've been either lucky or clever (or a mixture).
I've seen plenty of drivers suggested by drivermax that when installed messed things up. In one case rather comprehensively.
After that I did a bit of research and found it wasn't just me. I think that you can be fortunate and get good drivers with this, and obviously you seem to have, but I prefer to download drivers direct from the vendor.

Huh...I'll have a look. Mind you, it's not the quickest kid on the block now. The Barracuda in the old machine is noticeably quicker. And that's on 80 strand ribbon. It just makes a soft tearing noise with the case open. Silent otherwise. Rather impressive. Mind you, a younger person might hear it.

I've not checked on the spec of the WD drive yet. I've spent so much time getting the machine under control. (See Partition specific thread...if you're suffering from insomnia.)

Drivermax caused me more problems than it solved. The manufacturers' websites have consistently proven the best source for me.

I've found that Win 7 eventually finds all the drivers it needs, although it may take a day or two and several "reboots" to achieve that.

I suspect LR had his speakers muted - it does have that effect. I have the taskbar icon, so I can see if the little speaker has a red line through it.

I also have a nifty utiity called "Automuter" which turns the speakers off at 10pm and on again at 8 am.

I did wonder, but I recalled going into the right click items fairly early on. Mind you, with me brain as bad as it is these days.....

Did it again tonight. Several sessions with the nipper on Flight Sim, and then tonight, no sound. Checked carfully the obvious. Deleted Both Hi Def sound drivers in Device Manager, and rebooted. Got notification of new drivers being loaded, and away it went.

Any ideas just what corrupts the drivers...or other thoughts how this just refuses to speak to me?

I suspect there's something in there that knows which sound driver it wants, and will install it if not present. It's just looking for the wrong one.

It came on okay this AM, having shut me helicopter down at 02:30.

Apart from looking at the list of devices, I can't think what to do to find the culprit. If I catch it in a no-go state again, is there anything else to look at?
