LR - I've been using W7 RC Build 7100 for some time and have had multiple issues with my nVidia 8600 GSO 1.5GB card. "Apparantly" it'll all be good if I upgrade to the full version.
While I know the work arounds to upgrade from RC to RTM, I, well..... couldn't be stuffed yet.
Shunter - thanks for the clarification. Not much of a web programmer - I deal mostly with making Office do acrobatics.

That's interesting. I supposed I could load everything in XP's drive. Have to I suppose. Might be very revealing.
As I was typing that, there were several pauses in the print hitting the page. Now there is not.
Mmm...CPU usage is a bit frenetic. 25 - 70 % fluctuating, with system idle process confirming the sums. I can't see anything that would me making those demands.
I've stopped Avast! for a moment. No improvement.

Memory's quite stable, but the CPU seems to be working hard as soon as the browser is restarted and Pprune is back on. Using Cookie Cleaner seemed to help - for a while.
Does an almost residual half gig of main memory used seem acceptable?

LR - I wonder if the 'slow typing' thing is FF related? As you are aware there is a lot of disquiet about the amount of memory FF 3.5 etc is grabbing. I have occasional 'pauses' in typing with XPSP3/FF 3.5.7. I'm waiting for the 'replacement' FF to sort that out.
As for the Google Toolbar
. I went through a spate of constant firewall reminders that it wanted to install DESPITE
1) Uninstalling it
2) Hacking the folder out of the reg
3) Ensuring I never asked for it.
They have now ceased. mercifully, but Mrs B's Laptop is still getting them despite actions 1-3

I'm on 3. 0. 17 at this time.
I've concluded that I'll have to put things back the way they were and do some tests. I was looking through some of the photos from the photo thread, and they were jerking when scrolling. since they vary about 170k I'd have thought they would have scrolled quite easily with this card. It's nothing compared to rendering scenery in real time I would have thought.
I know the first loads of these pix was slow with the old card, but then it seemed quicker. But I'd need to do a re-run to really be scientific about it.
I'd also thought of bolstering the power with an old AT PSu strapped across the graphics card only. Testing for ground loops and noise first would be a chore.
oooch! nearly 3am and I up for the lens in the morning.

Er...
If the power supply is only 250 watt, that ain't going to feed enough amps to the graphics card to accle like it should.
A new PSU may not be the total solution, but it is certainly likely to improve things. I don't install less than 400 watt in anything these days.
Changing a power supply ain't difficult - it just requires a certain patience and dexterity. I'd do that before digging further.
Now ... what vintage is the motherboard? If that's 2002 or so, mebbe the time has come!

I'm quite surprised that HP put such a small PSU in a fairly brisk PC. I don't have much else loading it, but without scoping the lines I can't tell if the voltages drop. I doubt that my old AVO 8 would show such short transients.
I'll get back to it when I've got somewhere with Nikon. Right now, they're zero help whatsoever.
