Merging word documents - keep reference numbers the same

Hi all,

I'm trying to merge two word documents, however I want to keep my reference numbers the same.

Basically, I've got two chapters - each with their own reference. Lets say.

Chapter 1: reference numbers 1-10
Chapter 2: reference number 1-10

When I merge the two, I want to keep those numbers. But it's changing the Chapter 2 numbers to 11-20. I see why at it's following the number sequence, but is there a way around it and keep the original numbers?

I'm using Office 2008 for Mac.

Cheers

On a PC, at the start of chapter 2, something along the lines of insert > reference > footnote >start at 1

You should be able to insert a section break between the chapters and, in the second section, start the numbering again from 1.
