Unmountable_boot_volume

My wife started up the home pc yesterday and got this message. First she got the screen that gives you an option in what mode to start up the pc but not matter what is chosen you end up with a blue screen with the above message.
Can anyone shed any light as to what might be wrong and how to fix it?

thanks,

KF

To follow on to Sprogget's link, instead of using "chkdsk" as the MS instructions say, try using "Fixmbr" instead. This will rewrite the master boot record and might solve the issue faster than chkdsk will.
