Blackberry and Google maps
I have a Blackberry Bold, and have downloaded Google Maps which works brilliantly - just like the normal one with street maps and satelite views.
However, when I select 'My location' it displays a message saying something along the lines of 'to the nearest 1200 metres' and then shows me somewhere other than where I am - obviously not much use. Anyone got any ideas why it is so inaccurate? Is there something I need to set/unset to get a useful answer?
My Garmin pinpoints me so accurately I can see myself sitting on the runway, but being shown 1200 metres away is completely useless.

Google maps does not use GPS to help you navigate, it uses the cellphone masts from which you receive your signal. Have a look when you go a little further away, it will tell you that you are within 5000m of your location. It merely helps by providing you with a map, navigating with it is your baby!

Don't have a Blackberry but on the IPhone you have to make sure 'Location services' is switched on. If it is it will be accurrate to within a few meters.
Having said that the IPhone will ask if you want to switch it on if you ask for your location in google maps (touch the location button).
Hope that helps!!

My experience has been that initially Google Maps on Blackberry orientates itself using cell network triangulation, offering accuracy to within 1,000 m or so. It takes about two minutes for it to acquire GPS data, and then offers accuracy to within 7 m.

There seems to be something about posting a question on here that makes everything work without having to do anything. After reading the reply by Al Fakhem, I thought I'd give it another go and see what happened. It worked just as he said, almost instantly, and pinpointed my position so accurately I could see what room in the house I was in.
I swear it hasn't done this before!!! Ho-hum!
