New Toshiba with Vista - Recovery Disc XP
Recently took delivery of a new Tishiba laptop. Came with Vista Business loaded.
Problems:
1) Installed my legit copy of Office 2007 Professional but all applications therein open with the statement "not for commercial use" (I have not activated the 60 day trial that comes with the laptop)
2) Vista hangs up often
3) When trying to configure Outlook for exchange settings get the message to the effect of "shell DLL"
4) Shall I can Vista and install XP using recovery disc provided? (no Vista recovery disc provided).
Any guidance appreciated.

I also purchased a new Toshiba which came with Vista (Ultimate). I couldn't get on with it, so I "downgraded" to XP professional. IMO, it's probably the best decision I've ever made with respect to computers.
I'm surprised that you don't have a Vista recovery disc, and it would probably be best to get hold of one before you installed XP. (just incase you decide to change back).

Got told yesterday, by a tekkie in Best something or another, that they could no longer offer a cheap downgrade. "MS wants to push Vista." is what he said. For a lot of people, that's the only way that they'll move it.
Having said this, I've just been watching a "New minimal advertising T/V program," that I mentioned the other day. It was on my son's cheapie machine running 64 bit Vista. He's getting quite nifty with the OS already, and really, the handling of the menus was impressive. The T/V card went in with very little configuration and the machine's two hard-drives ealily cope with a Tivo-like programe management.
It seems that this is what Vista is all about. But for office use, my first impressions are, Why? So much effort for what was being done so well with XP.
Same son has a uni-issued Toshiba, and Vista drowns it...to the point that he seldom uses it.

Vista Recovery disk
Just got my daughter up and running with her new Toshiba Satellite 300 and the Toshiba recovery disk is made by using the Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator which is already incorporated into the Vista system.
Locate the Recovery Disk Creator on your computer, have two DVD disks or ten CD disks ready and simply run the programme.

One of the tekkies at this same place said that there is no operating system as such on a recovery disc. Can this be true? Wouldn't be much use with a hard disc change if that were the case.

Thanks for info; have done all Toshiba Recovery back-ups and backed up files and computer. I want to load the XP disc but it will not autoplay. Do I initiate from boot?

It does seem that C: drive software, including the system, can be totally replaced with Restore, but as the article says, the dross that came with the original installation will be reloaded. I for one just want a drive with the OS and essentials on it. If I had a proper CD, I would clean out the disc from scratch every year or so. I would also be responsible for my own backing up, but I can see that replacing all the programs would be unacceptable for many users.
The Fugitsu laptop I had for a while advertised 250 G hard-drive. After a vast system area and the restore area had been used, the main partition was only a tad over 167 Gig. This seemed to me to be a ridiculous waste of resources.

Rivets, sir, I can only agree 100% with your sentiments.
IMHO, the lack of installation media = no buy, until the manfrs. stopped fobbing off the public (and stood up to MS).

There is a cut down version of Vista called TinyVista by eXPerience that allegedly works remarkably well on even on a low spec PC, they also do a TinyXP.......completely illegal of course but interesting to see how Microsoft should have done it!

Not that I am one to defend Microsoft, being a Mac user myself, but ...
Since when is the lack of recovery CD anything to do with Microsoft.
The lack of recovery CD is due to the penny pinching bean counters employed by the hardware manufacturers.
With foresight, you can make your own recovery CD by using the bundled utilities to do so before you go mess up your computer. Alternatively, some manufacturers (e.g. Sony) allow you to buy recovery CDs via their spare parts line.
Alternatively, as at least one other poster has pointed out, buy a Mac. They all come with recovery CDs AFAIK.

Ok, I stand corrected, butl the context of your standing up to Microsoft comment wasn't very clear then.
P.S. Loose Rivets
It's "techie"...... the root of the abbreviation coming from "technology".

I have a Toshiba with Vista and everything works perfectly. No problems at all with Vista.....Far easier to use than XP (Ducks down).....I think a lot of problems people have are just blamed on Vista and not on anything else in the computer.....
