Core 2 Duo and Centrino

Mmmm...just left a store having been told that Centrino and Core 2 Duo are two different chips. Certainly, NONE of their stock had both sticker.

My short-lived love affair with a Fugitsu / Seimans was on a machine proudly displaying both stickers. As I've mentioned before, it really was difficult to fault this machine.

When I went to Staples in the UK, the young man said Centrino shouldn't be confueed with the processor. Okay, thinks I, it must be a name for the chipset.

Here in Texas, the guy made the first statement. Both can't be right...can they?

Centrino is a platform-marketing initiative from Intel. It is not a mobile CPU - rather, the term covers a particular combination of mainboard chipset, mobile CPU and wireless network interface in the design of a laptop personal computer. Intel claimed that systems equipped with these technologies should deliver better performance, longer battery life and broad wireless network interoperability.

The Core 2 brand refers to a range of Intel's consumer 64-bit dual-core and 2x2 MCM quad-core CPUs with the x86-64 instruction set, based on the Intel Core microarchitecture, derived from the 32-bit dual-core Yonah laptop processor.

So the Texan was wrong - and so are you!

Centrino is an "architecture" for laptops. Core 2 is a family of processors, some of which may be incorporated into that architecture.

I think Centrino refers to the whole package of capability. This is from wikipedia, but just search for centrino.

"To qualify for a Centrino label, laptop vendors must use all three Intel qualified parts under each platform. Using only the processor and chipset will carry the Pentium M, Pentium Dual-Core, Celeron, Intel Core or Intel Core 2 label instead."

Edit: Ho hum - both up too early on a Saturday morning!

Centrino means all intel chips inside, not just the CPU. The upside is that you get a pretty good wireless chipset. The downside is you get pretty mediocre, usually shared memory, graphics chipset. In the real world, it's just a branding exercise and you shouldn't let the presence or absence of a Centrino sticker affect your purchasing decision.

Oh, c'mon Saab, guessing that it was the chip-set wasn't a bad stab in the dark.

An yes, the lad here in Tx had no idea, but said he would gen up on it. I'll test him tomorrow Now that I'm armed with more info.

Oddly, I'd gone some way with Wikki, but hadn't got such a succinct statement on my search. Thanks for the gen chaps, it was certainly born out with the battery life, but my attempts to get on line were frustrated by not being allowed to let BT reinstate the phone. One name that came up was Rosie the Cat. By the most extra ordinary chance, I had adopted that cat some years before. The owner claimed it back months later when she got back from a crisis. Anyway, it was a very rare breed, so I typed that in. Bingo, I was in!

I had some wonderful photos of the cat, and would have loved to make one appear on her computer, but hadn't the faintest how to go about it...and din't want to get into trouble sneaking into other's computers. Shame, it would have been fun.
